Quick Questions...

Q. How can I help improve the well-being of the people who work for me? Isn’t that the responsibility of the HR people?

I suppose that it should be the concern of any employer or manager to care for their employee. The question seems to be more and more how much is my responsibility. The HR people can really only help set guidelines and standards. No matter how many programs they run, and they do run important programs in most organisations, they don’t have the same influence over the people as their bosses do. Have you spent sometime talking to your HR people about how you might help?

Q. Work is work, why should we worry about people’s well-being beyond the normal work practices?

If for no other reason, because it pays to make sure that people are doing well by their work. People who are happy and satisfied with their work and who work for people who they believe care for them are much more productive than people who believe that their work is a hinderance to life. Besides, most people don’t completely leave their personal lives at the door when the come to work. Good thing too, they often bring many valuable assets beyond their formal skills sets that important for good business.

Q. I heard that some workplaces make people sick...I don’t mean because there are toxins or bacteria in the air, etc. Is that true?

Well, I know that when I don’t have much control over what I am doing, how its to be done and when, I tend to get stressed out and tired. If it goes on too long I tend to end up getting a cold or the flu and have to slow down a little. It might not stop me from coming to work, but I seem to have an excuse for not working so hard. I am trying to take more responsibility for my job and the processes. Sometimes I realise that I don’t take enough control or could gain more if I pointed out why that would allow me to do a better job.

Q. What can I do to make work a better place for me?

I think you’ve made a good start by asking how you can make work better for you. It’s certainly important for the employer to take an interest in this area and I am all for it. However, the employee also has to take responsibility as well. The more that employees participate in obtaining what they need to work and live well, the power they have to take control over their lives and live them creatively. Any employer should be thrilled to have employees who want to improve their lot. It will improve the organisation as well.

Q. What do you mean by well-being?
